How Many Tacos Do You Need Per Person? A Party Planning Guide

The short answer: plan on 3 street-sized tacos per adult, 2 larger restaurant-sized tacos per adult, and 1 to 2 tacos per child. Big eaters and teenagers can push that to 4 or 5, so most hosts land on 3.5 tacos per person as a safe average when the crowd is mixed.

Quick reference: tacos per person

Street tacos use 4.5-inch corn tortillas and roughly 2 ounces of filling. Restaurant tacos use 6-inch tortillas and 3 to 4 ounces. Adults average 3 street tacos, 2 restaurant tacos. Kids under 10 average 1 to 2. Teens and heavy eaters average 4 to 5. If tacos are the only main dish, add one extra per adult.

How much meat do I need per person?

Budget 6 ounces of cooked meat per adult and 3 ounces per child. Raw meat shrinks: ground beef loses about 25 percent, pork shoulder for carnitas loses about 40 percent, and chuck for birria loses about 35 percent. So for 6 ounces cooked from pork shoulder, buy 10 ounces raw.

Scaling for 10, 25, 50 and 100 guests

For 10 adults: 4 pounds cooked meat, 35 tortillas, 3 cups salsa. For 25: 10 pounds cooked meat, 90 tortillas, 7 cups salsa. For 50: 19 pounds cooked meat, 175 tortillas, 14 cups salsa. For 100: 38 pounds cooked meat, 350 tortillas, 28 cups salsa. Always buy 10 to 15 percent more tortillas than tacos, because some tear while warming.

Toppings and sides per person

Per guest, plan 2 tablespoons each of diced onion and chopped cilantro, 3 tablespoons of salsa, 2 tablespoons of crema, a quarter of a lime, and 1 ounce of cheese if you are serving it. Rice and beans stretch a taco bar considerably: a half cup of each per guest lets you drop meat needs by about 20 percent.

Two or three fillings, not six

Guests take more total food when there are many options, which drives waste. Two or three fillings covers most crowds: one beef or pork, one chicken, and one vegetarian. Plan roughly 45 percent of the meat as the crowd favorite, 35 percent as the second, and 20 percent vegetarian.

Leftovers are a feature

Cooked taco meat holds four days refrigerated and three months frozen, so overbuying protein is low risk. Overbuying cut avocado, crema and dressed slaw is high risk, because they do not keep. Round up on meat and tortillas, round down on anything already prepped.
